Spatial planning at the Fringes: FA BUT to take part in AESOP PhD workshop
The international AESOP PhD Workshop 2026 will take place in
Drosendorf, Austria, from 22 to 25 September. This year’s edition, entitled
‘Spatial Planning at the Fringes’, is being organised by representatives of TU
Wien and the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology. The
workshop is financially supported by the European University Alliance for
Spatial Planning (EULiST).

Organised under the auspices of the Association of European
Schools of Planning, the workshop will focus on spatial planning in the context
of current social, environmental and geopolitical changes. It will bring into
the spotlight topics, places and approaches that are often marginalised in
planning debates. The organisers interpret the term ‘fringes’ not only as the
physical edges of a territory, but also as social and ecological limits,
innovative niches, or as yet little-explored research methods and planning
approaches.
The workshop’s theme brings together several dimensions.
Attention will be paid to peripheral, rural, border and transit areas, which
tend to be under-represented in development debates compared to large urban
agglomerations. Another thematic area will be territorial transformations over
time, long-term scenarios and planning for the future. The workshop will also
focus on social exclusion, equity and the inclusion of marginalised groups, as
well as on sustainable transformations in the fields of housing, mobility,
energy, agriculture, adaptation to climate change and the development of green
and blue infrastructure. Innovative approaches to research, participation,
territorial governance and knowledge creation constitute a separate area of
focus.

The four-day programme will feature presentations of
doctoral research, discussions, interactive sessions and individual
consultations with mentors from European and Canadian universities. It will
also include a lecture by Christian Werthmann and Christian Corral from Leibniz
Universität Hannover, focusing on a framework for assessing and designing a
greener and more democratic urban future. Participants will also take part in a
panel discussion on urban development planning in the new world order and
attend a specialist programme in Znojmo.
