Urban Youth Brought Pekařská Street to Life. Student Initiatives Entered the Public Space
On Thursday, May 28, 2026, the small square at the
intersection of Pekařská and Anenská streets came alive with a public
presentation of the Urban Youth: The City According to You project. The Faculty
of Architecture at BUT joined the event as a partner
and an active participant in a process that connects young people, the city,
and contemporary thinking about public space.
POP–UP PEKAŘSKÁ presented the results of several months of work by students who explored how the younger generation perceives the city and how it can contribute to its transformation. From analytical maps, field observations, and proposals emerged a concrete intervention right in the streets of Brno—a temporary intervention responding to the everyday functioning of the site and its community potential.
The program itself featured the ceremonial unveiling of the
installation, a presentation of the entire process from analysis to
implementation, and an open debate on the future of public space in Brno. The
event was complemented by a community program and informal gatherings of
visitors.
Public Space as a Laboratory
The Urban Youth project treats the city as an open
laboratory and combines participatory approaches with testing designs in
real-world conditions. An important component consists of so-called “reality
checks,” during which students validate their designs through dialogue with
actual users of the space.
The installations were created as part of a design-build
studio at the FA BUT, led by
Marie Joja. The authors of the implemented interventions are Kristýna
Škrabalová and Radek Zabloudil.
The event confirmed that even small, temporary interventions
can raise important questions about the sharing of space, its use, and who
participates in shaping it.
The Urban Youth project is organized by the Archipop studio.
The project is co-financed by the European Union and is carried out with financial support from the City of Brno, under the patronage of the Mayor of Brno and the Governor of the South Moravian Region.
Project partners include the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology and Vesna.
